Codon Learning awarded Phase II NSF SBIR grant to help college students develop stronger metacognitive skills

Golden, CO., JAN 5, 2022 – Codon Learning Inc. has been awarded a Phase II National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant for $1,000,000 to conduct research and development on a learning platform to help college students develop stronger metacognitive skills using their own personal learning data.

Codon Learning will beta test the platform this spring to help educators address metacognitive equity, a term coined by advisor Dr. Saundra McGuire. Dr. McGuire posits that all students must be taught how to learn and that educators need to close the gap between students who have learned effective metacognitive skills and those who have not. Codon Learning’s platform uses students’ individual learning data to teach many of the key metacognitive skills—self-testing, spaced learning, and interleaving—that students need to succeed in college.
